How to check a dermatologist's registration in India

By FindDermat Editorial TeamSources checked: 26 September 2026

Registration check: step by step

  • Ask for the doctor's full name, registration number and State Medical Council.
  • Open the official Indian Medical Register and search by registration number first.
  • If needed, search by name and council, then check the relevant State Medical Council website.
  • Compare the register entry with the clinic's profile, prescription or displayed credentials.
  • For specialist care, check whether the dermatology qualification shown by the clinic also appears in official records where available.
  • If details do not match, pause and request clarification from the doctor, council or hospital.

What a registration result does—and does not—tell you

A matching registration entry helps confirm that a person is listed as a registered medical practitioner. It does not guarantee a treatment result, prove experience with your particular condition or replace a conversation about risks, alternatives and follow-up care.

The NMC notes that registry data is being updated. If you cannot find a record, do not immediately assume misconduct; recheck spellings and numbers, then contact the relevant council for confirmation.

Red flags worth checking before you book

  • The clinic will not provide a registration number or gives changing details.
  • The name on the register, prescription and clinic profile does not match.
  • A provider guarantees a cure or pressures you into a procedure before assessment.
  • The stated specialist qualification cannot be explained or independently confirmed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I search the NMC register using a doctor's name?

Yes. The Indian Medical Register provides searches by doctor name, registration number, registration year and State Medical Council. A registration-number search is usually the most specific.

Does FindDermat certify doctors listed on the website?

No. FindDermat reviews submitted profile information before publication, but this is not certification by the NMC or a State Medical Council. Patients should confirm registration through an official register.

What should I do if the registration entry is missing?

Check the spelling, registration number and council, then try the relevant State Medical Council register. Because databases can be updated at different times, contact the council or clinic for clarification before drawing a conclusion.
